Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Wednesday, March 19, 2025 – Atlantic University has announced an innovative initiative, in collaboration with the biotechnology industry, to transform workforce training through cutting-edge immersive technologies, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and advanced simulation techniques. The initiative aims to modernize training methodologies, accelerate employee onboarding, and improve retention by leveraging tools that align with the learning preferences of a tech-savvy generation.
This program is paving the way for new talent pipelines, bringing video game engine expertise to industries like biotech and pharma, sectors that traditionally did not consider such skills. Platforms like Epic Games’ Unreal Engine and Unity are now integral to creating VR, AR, and 3D simulation environments.
Dr. Zayira Jordán Conde, President of Atlantic University, highlighted: “The future of education lies not only in academic knowledge but in the ability to adapt that knowledge to real-world applications using groundbreaking technologies. This program creates a unique opportunity for our students to bridge the gap between education and industry, while simultaneously empowering them to lead the transformation of critical sectors like biotechnology”.
Atlantic University has developed a special projects course that allows student developers to collaborate directly with internal teams from the biotech industry, including Atlantic University alumni. Together, they assess project needs and set trimester objectives, providing students with both academic credit and hands-on experience in a cooperative (COOP) placement at a biotech manufacturing facility.
Luis Cortés, Director of Manufacturing at Amgen Manufacturing Limited (AML), shared: “As a company, our goal is to innovate and capitalize on cutting-edge technologies for the research, development, formulation, and production of new medicines. These immersive training tools will enable us to further develop talent across the biomanufacturing industry.”
Fernando J. Montilla, Chief Innovation and Technology Officer at Atlantic University, added: “Suddenly, video game development skills are becoming relevant to industries far beyond gaming. These engines offer a ‘Holy Grail’ for training by enabling real-time 3D world creation, custom scenario design, and immersive user experiences with instant feedback. We’re not only modernizing training but also helping the biotech industry recognize the potential of a workforce equipped with these cutting-edge skills. That’s innovation at its core.”
This program underscores the commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in workforce training, positioning Atlantic University as a leader in utilizing immersive technologies for real-world and biotech applications, with a vision to transform both the local and global biotech landscape.
